Welcome by MSc CoSEM Programme Manager, Ivo Bouwmans |
|
Greetings from Delft! It's great that you have expressed your interest in our CoSEM programme! Every year we welcome students from all over the world, and it would be wonderful if you were among them this year.
No doubt you already know what the study is focused on, otherwise you wouldn't have applied. If you want to know in even more detail what's in the programme, you could visit www.CoSEM.nl. There you will find, among other things, a map with all courses, where you can click on the course descriptions.
You will then see that we start with a one-week course, also known as Boot Camp. We dive right into the design of a socio-technical system, and several lecturers from the first year give a lecture. It is a packed, but very rewarding week. Students are also invited to dinner and fun activities to get to know each other better. I look forward to this every year.
Hope you are admitted so I can welcome you to the faculty in September!
Ivo Bouwmans

CoSEM Education |
Complex Systems Engineering and Management (CoSEM) is a two-year Master's programme that aims at designing solutions for complex socio-technical systems from the combined perspectives of governance, systems and values. Students can specialize in designing solutions in one of the four technology tracks—Energy, Information & Communication, Transport & Logistics, or Health—right from the start of their study.
The first year of CoSEM consists of mandatory core courses, constrained-choice methods courses and track-specific courses. In the core and skills courses, students will gain essential knowledge in complex systems engineering. In the track-specific courses, they will learn to navigate the multi-actor and socio-political contexts in complex systems relevant to their chosen domain.
The second year offers students various opportunities to further tailor their studies through electives, interdisciplinary projects, internships, and/or studying abroad. This flexibility and range of options were critical factors in our choice to enroll in the CoSEM programme!
Joint Interdisciplinary Project (JIP)
The Joint Interdisciplinary Project (JIP) is a 15 ECTS external project that offers an exceptional opportunity to incorporate real interdisciplinary teamwork into your Master's. You will work together with passionate fellow students and technical innovation companies on a business case to create an innovative impact.
Internships
You also have the option to complete an internship with an external company, which will be supervised by a CoSEM lecturer. The internship can either be taken as an elective or as part of your graduation project in your final year. The study association Curius provides various opportunities for internships and graduation projects.
Study Abroad
With its strong international focus in both teaching and research, the CoSEM programme offers numerous opportunities for studying abroad. You can arrange an exchange at any of the partner universities of TPM, both within the EU through the Erasmus+ program and outside of it. |

New in CoSEM: Explore the Health Track! |
Starting the academic year 2025-2026, CoSEM is thrilled to introduce a new technology track: Health.
The Health Track focuses on enabling transitions in the health and care domain that are essential to creating safe and sustainable health and care systems. From the way societies are designed to how healthcare organisations perform, and even down to the quality of personal care you receive. The Health Track provides education that addresses challenges and opportunities at each of these levels, with an emphasis on designing smart solutions, such as new technologies, policies, or regulations, to improve health and care system performance.
This track is tailored for students aiming to make a difference in the health and care as systems engineers. Potential roles include managing healthcare as a socio-technical system, driving innovation in health and care practices, developing information systems to support and enhance medical decision-making, creating interventions for health promotion, or contributing to policymaking at the government level.
Please note that if you are interested in this new opportunity, you can easily switch tracks before starting your studies! Don't miss out on this chance to make a real impact in the health and care landscape! |

Studying at TU Delft
Academic Culture |
|
Every university has its own academic culture shaping how students learn and work together, and TU Delft is no exception. As international students, we often gain a fresh perspective on these differences. Here are some standout elements of academic life at CoSEM and TU Delft that capture the essence of our experience:
• Teamwork
Group work is a critical part of many courses at TU Delft! You will work together with fellow students from diverse backgrounds to tackle complex problems, improving your problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills. Whether you are born as a team player or looking to develop these abilities, this will be the perfect environment for you to shine and grow!
• Feedback & Support
Lecturers and teaching assistants always provide detailed feedback, even for small assignments. Both teachings and administrative staff are super approachable at TU Delft, so do not hesitate to ask questions or seek guidance whenever you need it!
• Learning by Doing
Courses in CoSEM always involve real-world applications in various forms. You might find yourself negotiating energy policies on behalf of a farmer community or modelling flood adaptation strategies for households in Texas. Learning goes beyond the classroom and prepares you to tackle real challenges in complex systems.
Chat with a Student |
|
The very beginning of your master education journey is a phase, as we also experienced, filled with curiosity about various aspects, such as courses, life, academic culture, extracurricular opportunities, travel, finance, and hundreds more. While we try to cover these subjects in our newsletters, nothing can replace real-life experience!
Chat with a Student offers an amazing opportunity for you to chat with current TU Delft students, asking them about their experiences, decision process, how they reflect back on their studies, and anything else you are interested in. The website filters students to chat with based on their level and area of study and even country/region they came from. So you can even have a conversation in your native language! Don't wait, reach out and get first-hand insights into life at TU Delft! |

• Housing: If you plan to look for housing through the university, make sure to register on the housing portal.
• Visa: Your visa will be processed through Osiris in the subsequent steps. You can find more information about this process here.
Stay tuned for the second edition for all information! |
