Welcome by MSc CoSEM Programme Manager, Ivo Bouwmans

Greetings from Delft! It's great that you have expressed your interest in our CoSEM programme! Every year we welcome students from all over the world, and it would be wonderful if you were among them this year.

No doubt you already know what the study is focused on, otherwise you wouldn't have applied. If you want to know in even more detail what's in the programme, you could visit  www.CoSEM.nl. There you will find, among other things, a map with all courses, where you can click on to the course descriptions.

You will then see that we start with a one-week course, also known as Boot Camp. We dive right into the design of a socio-technical system, and several lecturers from the first year give a lecture. It is a packed, but very rewarding week. Students also are invited to dinner and fun activities to get to know each other better. I look forward to this every year.

Hopefully you will be admitted to CoSEM and I can welcome you to the faculty in September!

Ivo Bouwmans
CoSEM Programme Manager

Please note: Receiving this newsletter does not imply admission to the CoSEM programme.

2024 Timeline

CoSEM Education
The CoSEM Master's programme is a two year programme which teaches students how to design within complex socio-technical systems, focusing on integrating technological engineering with the governance and management of the systems from various perspectives. Students select from three tracks: Energy, Information and Communication, and Transport and Logistics.

The first year is primarily general and track specific coursework. The second year of study affords students the opportunity to tailor our studies even further to our preferences through electives selection, internship, selection of their masters thesis, and study abroad. This flexibility and breadth of opportunity was a deciding factor in our decision to study in the CoSEM programme!

Electives
In the 2nd quarter of 2nd year, students choose elective packages from TU Delft, or design our own, with approval. These elective credits can also be taken abroad at a host of TU Delft partner universities.

Internships

Students can opt for an internship with an external company supervised by a COSEM lecturer. The internship can be done as an elective or as part of their graduation project in their final year. The study association Curius also offers various vacancies for internships and graduation projects.

Joint Interdisciplinary Programme (JIP)

This is a 15 ECTS programme offered in the second year of the master's programme. The unique thing about this programme is that you get the chance to work with an external company on an exciting project and work with students from other faculties and different educational backgrounds as is usually experienced in the working world.

Study Abroad

The COSEM programme has an international character to it in both its topics and research scope. As such, the master has as an option a Study Abroad programme for students to pursue courses of interest or internships in countries outside of the Netherlands.

Master's Thesis
In the third semester of the programme, students are oriented to our thesis in the Master's thesis research design course. Then, in our last two quarters of the final year, we devoted the full 21 weeks to an individual academic research paper concerning the design of solutions for large and complex contemporary socio-technical problems. Graduation projects are posted on the internal graduation project portal, thesis circles, or within our study association. With approval from a TPM supervisor, we can also graduate by conducting a graduation project at an external company.

Online Master's Q&A:

Academic Culture

As every country and nation has developed a unique culture during their long-lasting histories, we can argue the same for universities, faculties and even master programmes. Each has its own culture, style and way of doing things. As international students, we are likely to distinguish differences with our outsider look. We would like to interest you with a few highlights that we found different from our previous studies.

  • Emphasis on Teamwork. Most courses I have taken here have a group project as a large portion of the course! Not only has this created a close cohort of students, but also has encouraged me to develop my ability to work productively in a team to write papers, design solutions, and organize effective meetings: critical skills in any professional setting!
  • Plenty of Feedback. Either the lecturer or teaching assistants will provide ample feedback even for small assignments. I have found that teaching and administrative staff are very approachable if I am uncertain on an assignment or concept, so do not hesitate to chat with them.
  • Application of theory. You are not left with the theory and concepts only. Courses always involve the implementation of what you have learned. So, you may find yourself at a negotiation table while representing a farmer community for a district energy discussion or modeling the flood adaptation for households in Texas.

Chat with a student

We know that you are at the very beginning of your master education journey. And that phase as we also experienced is all about curiosity. Being curious about things like the CoSEM programme, courses, living in Delft, studying and hundreds more. We try to reach out to you and fill you in via the newsletters, or you have the CoSEM module website at your disposal to read about course contents, but nothing substitutes for the real life experiences doesn't it?

TU Delft offers this amazing service that enables you to chat with students. Ask them about their experiences, how they chose their study and how they think about it now and anything that concerns you.

Website offers you to filter out students to chat based on their level of study, area of study and even country/region they came from. So you can even have a conversation in your native language! Don't wait, click on this website and reach out to students who are waiting chat with you.

About Holland
Deciding to follow the CoSEM Masters Programme is also a decision to live in the Netherlands! You may find that the culture, infrastructure, and general logistics of housing or banking here are very different from your home country. But don't worry, TU Delft has a wealth of knowledge in helping the many international students settle into their new home, from finding a community on campus to learn Dutch!

Here are some resources specific to education in the Netherlands and TU Delft.

After deciding
Some steps you have to do after deciding to choose TU Delft as your university

Funding: The primary way of funding your masters here at TU Delft is self-funding. The deadline for requesting a scholarship of TU Delft was December 2023, so this is not an option anymore.

Housing: Make sure to opt in for the housing portal, if you want to look for housing through the university.

Visa: The visa would be taken care of via Osiris in the further steps. More information about this can be found here.

Stay tuned for the second edition for all the information.
