Hi there! Welcome to the first (of three) newsletters for all new Master students in CoSEM
You have registered for the master's program Complex Systems Engineering & Management (CoSEM)! You may still have doubts about whether you are going to follow this program or what studying at TU Delft actually entails. To help you make this choice, three international students have gathered all the information they need to help you!

Meet the team
We are a team of three current international CoSEM students, Marilyn, Doruk and Emre, who also had doubts before deciding to come here, so we decided to join and write this issue from our own experiences to orient newcomers. This issue covers the uniqueness of the programme, reputation of TU Delft, teaching style, campus facilities and activities, budget, lifestyle in Delft, transportation and connectivity of the city, and things you should consider after deciding to come.

Welcome by Director of Studies MSc CoSEM, Ivo Bouwmans

Each year I look forward to meeting our new students from all over the world. We start the CoSEM programme with the Boot Camp week, in which our freshies design a system, working together in groups. This year it was a bicycle parking system for our own campus. You can imagine that due to COVID restrictions we were quite limited in what we were allowed to do on campus. But every day we could invite another part of the group to the campus to work together face to face. We ended each day with a dinner, and several activities to get to know each other better. In spite of the limitations, students and staff had an entertaining week, almost as good as in pre-corona times. I hope you too will be admitted to the CoSEM programme, so I can welcome you to the faculty during our next edition of Boot Camp!

Ivo Bouwmans
CoSEM Director of Studies

Please note: Receiving this newsletter does not imply admission to the CoSEM programme

Practical Education

The COSEM Master’s program explores the complex interactions between society and technology. In continuation of that exploration, the faculty offers students the chance to put the tools learned into practice. The programs described below can also be used to add credits to your master’s program.

Internships: Students can opt for an internship with an external company supervised by a COSEM lecturer. The internship can be done as an elective or as part of their graduation project in their final year. The study association Curius also offers various vacancies for internships and graduation projects.

Joint Interdisciplinary Project (JIP):
This is a 15 ECTS program offered in the second year of the master’s program. The unique thing about this program is that you get the chance to work with an external company on an exciting project and work with students from other faculties and different educational backgrounds as is usually experienced in the working world.

Study Abroad:
The COSEM program has an international character to it in both its topics and research scope. As such, the master has as an option a Study Abroad program for students to pursue courses of interest or internships in countries outside of the Netherlands.

Culture of Academic Life

As every country and nation has developed a unique culture during their long-lasting histories, we can argue the same for universities, faculties and even master programs. Each has its own culture, style and way of doing things. As international students, we are likely to distinguish differences with our outsider look. I would like to interest you with a few highlights that I found different from my previous studies.
  • Lots of feedback. You are always provided with feedback by either the lecturer or teaching assistants even for small assignments or tasks. If not enough, you can always ask for more.
  • Checkpoints on the way. The program is designed to support you and make you accomplish at the end; it is not against you. Even though you have to deal with a considerable workload there are always checkpoints and guidance to keep you on the right way.
  • Approachable staff. You are entering into a family with different customs and cultures, and most naturally, you may be lost about what you are expected. Responsible staff for the course are quite responsive, kind and approachable as long as you let them know.
  • Application of theory. You are not left with the theory and concepts only. Courses always involve the implementation of what you have learnt. So, you may find yourself at a negotiation table while representing a farmer community for a district heating discussion or modelling the emergency response process of the city of Turin.
  • Thriving for teamwork. Sometimes you start forgetting how many group projects you were in. If you are born a natural team player, it is the place to shine. If not, you will get there in no time!
