Hi there! Welcome to the second (of three) newsletters for all new Master students in EPA.
You have registered for the master's program Engineering and Policy Analysis (EPA)! You may still have doubts about whether you are going to follow this program or what studying at TU Delft actually entails. To help you make this choice, three international students have gathered all the information they need to help you!

Meet the team
We are a team of three current international EPA students, Morris, Imam and Ettore, , who also had doubts before deciding to come here, so we decided to join and write this issue from our own experiences to orient newcomers. This issue covers the counsellors at the faculty and interviews with the teaching faculty and alumni. We have also enclosed some information about the health insurance and GP registration.

What's going on at the fifth floor?!

Just a brief note on what is going on here in The Hague. Courses, of course. Now with good weather as a context. April is quite intense here. Not just because of the courses, but because of all kind of extracurricular activities that are organized here. These posters casually stuck on a wall show just a sample of activities, organized by study association Dentatus and by the EPA program: a seminar about Climate Change and Housing Policy, an elective series on Water, a Business Tour, a Book Club, A Borrel (Drinks) and a seminar by EPA alumni, that are eager to have their sentimental journey back to EPA.

Again, this is just a sample. It looks like the sun energizes us to wake up after the lockdown period!

Welcome by Director of Studies MSc EPA, Haiko van der Voort

What are you most excited about the upcoming EPA cohort? I thoroughly like the diversity of EPA-students. They come from everywhere. Just see the world map that is on the wall here at the 5th floor of Wijnhaven. Every student is invited to put a sticker on the place of birth.

Ok, there is some concentration in Western Europe. But there is also a huge variety of other countries. You feel it every day here. Somehow this diversity is a connector. There is eagerness to learn about each other’s culture. EPA involves a lot of group work, so there is a natural mechanism to exchange wisdoms and – let’s be fair – stupidities of cultures.

We – Agaby Masih and Charles Fayt – are looking forward to meeting you all at the start of the Academic year. We will be your Academic Counsellors for the whole duration of your time with us in Delft.

But what does an Academic Counsellor do?
You can reach out to us by - mail – appointment - during consultation hours - to discuss things impacting your study.

But what kind of things?
Think of studying with a disability, need of making a new study planning, study skills, when you have unfortunately to deal with personal circumstances reducing your ability to study. It can also be about the choices to be made within your programme as electives or thesis. We are here for you offering a listening ear in a safe environment free of judgements. We can also help you get access or redirect you to some of the many facilities at the Delft like the student psychologists, student doctors. Do you know of writing coaches or the opportunity to work on your personal development by taking a workshop on essential study skills? We are very much looking forward to meeting you at the faculty!

About Health Related Services
All students at TU Delft are required to have adequate medical and personal liability insurance. It is your obligation to ensure that you are adequately insured on the day you depart for the Netherlands.

The following link provides all details about the insurance depending on your nationality: Click here.

The GP or the General practitioner is your nearby doctor. In the Netherlands, you must register yourself to the GP after you have received your BSN. The link for details regarding this: Click here.

Timeline Infographics
Please note that you have to finish the financial requirements as explained in the financial letter before the first of July.

Meet Here are Mocha, Coco, and Larry!

The alpacas are a student’s initiative during the past lockdowns. In the sparse moments that students were allowed to come by, the idea was that it would be good to have something to hug. In fact, I have laughed at the initiators when they introduced them. But I proved to be wrong. Larry, Coco and Mocca are unmissable personalities here at Wijnhaven. They are quickly becoming symbol of the EPA community here. Our office manager Lilian told me that there are little ones. I leave it up to her to introduce them whenever you come by.
